Handicap Vans Offer Many Advantages

There have been countless advances in mobility equipment technology in recent years. As a result, individuals living with disabilities are able to get around far easier than ever before. For the greatest independence, many disabled people are purchasing their own handicap vans as a way to get to and from work or school, to see friends and family, or to simply run daily errands.

For both disabled passengers and drivers, wheelchair vans are an excellent way to regain independence. It can be a great challenge to get into and out of a vehicle that hasn’t been converted with mobility features. These days, there are ramp systems that are both lightweight and incredibly durable. They fold up and store within a vehicle while leaving plenty of room for passengers as well as supplies.

Modern wheelchair lift systems provide the greatest convenience especially for those with more extensive mobility limitations. A lift can either hoist a wheelchair onto the back of a vehicle or into the vehicle for storage, or it can accommodate both wheelchair and occupant for an easy, reliable way of entering and exiting a vehicle safely. Inside lifts are often necessary for disabled drivers who need a way to get into and out of the vehicle without having to leave their wheelchair.

It is far easier for disabled individuals to hold a job or to go to school with the assistance of handicap accessible vehicles. For this reason, there are local and federal organizations that offer grants to disabled people in need of a mobility vehicle for the purpose of attending school or a job.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of handicap vans is that they allow disabled individuals a way to leave the isolation of their home in order to attend events or to see family or friends. Mobility vehicles provide a more convenient way for people living with disabilities to remain active members of society.

Tips for Buying an Accessible Van

Are you looking for a way to increase your mobility and your freedom? Traditionally, this has been very difficult for handicapped individuals to accomplish. However, an accessible van can give you back the freedom and independence that you thought long lost. How do these vans work? What should you know about buying one? Here, you’ll learn a few important tips for finding the right vehicle for your needs.

Find the Right Configuration

Much like regular vans, you will find that you have a wide selection of vehicles from which to choose when you decide to purchase an accessible van. However, all of this can be boiled down to two primary options – minivans and full size vans. Both have pros and cons. For instance, minivans usually need to have their floor lowered, which means modification to the original body. However, they are more maneuverable. Full size vans do not require any lowering of the floor, but they are larger and more difficult to maneuver. You will need to determine which configuration appeals to you the most. [Read more →]

Features You Need In a Wheelchair Vehicle

Before you buy a wheelchair vehicle, you need to understand the available features so you can find the right vehicle for your needs. With so many options on the market today, it’s important to make sure you find the right van, minivan, or SUV for your specific needs. One thing to consider if you’ll be driving the vehicle yourself is the many controls and options that can make it easier for you to drive safely in spite of your mobility problems. No matter what your level of mobility is, driving is easier than ever on today’s market.

The ignition is probably the first thing to consider when buying a wheelchair vehicle. The location of the ignition can make a huge difference in its accessibility for you. It’s best to consider dash-mounted ignitions or even keyless ignitions to make it easier for you to start the car in spite of challenged with dexterity. The transmission of the vehicle you’ll want should be automatic, so that’s most certainly something to look for as well. If you’re driving with hand controls, driving a car with a manual transmission could be nearly impossible. This shouldn’t be a problem, though, because almost all cars are available with automatic transmissions these days. [Read more →]

Van lift helps family find freedom

TROY — The Morris family is more mobile now that 5-year-old Rachel is using a wheelchair lift purchased with a low-interest loan from United

Family outings are easier for Zach, Rachel and their mother Lori now that the Morris family has a fully equipped van thanks to a loan from United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan.

Family outings are easier for Zach, Rachel and their mother Lori now that the Morris family has a fully equipped van thanks to a loan from United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan.

Cerebral Palsy of Michigan’s Assistive Technology Loan Fund.

Before they acquired the equipment, Rachel’s parents, Paul and Lori, had to lift Rachel and her wheelchair into vehicles. The task was enough to sometimes make them think twice about going places.

Rachel has Rett syndrome, a developmental disorder that causes functional problems in the brain.

“My back is so thankful now,” Lori Morris said of the wheelchair lift.

Friends and relatives provided a much-appreciated fundraiser for the family’s van, but they still needed help for the adaptations.

“The loan fund provided the final resource for a wheelchair lift to complete our adapted van,” Morris said.

Before they obtained the van and lift, the Morrises would need to take into account such considerations as the length of a trip and the amount of room for a wheelchair in the vehicle they were using.

“It’s not such a burden to go places now. Now, there’s no question; we’re always going,” said Morris, recalling how easy it was to transport Rachel, when she was wearing a dress and high heels, to a recent wedding. [Read more →]
